Pritchett Canyon to Hunter Canyon Loop, Moab, Utah

The Pritchett Canyon to Hunter Canyon loop makes for a nice dayhike. The distance is rather short, maybe 18 kilometers or so. But don't be fooled- there are some challenges. I did this hike in 2002, mid-summer, and upon finding the route down into Hunter Canyon, which took a bit of work in itself, found myself in a jungle of common cane. I was wearing shorts, as i usually do, and came out with infinite small slices up and down my legs. You may want to wear pants for this one, or consider a method for clearing a path beforehand.

The trailhead is reached by taking Kane Creek Road out of Moab toward the river. Once you reach the river, you will travel about 4 kilometers where you will see parking for the trail. I have not been down the road in a few years. Last time I checked the trailhead and parking were on private property and there was a small fee charged at a self-serve pay station.

From the parking area head up Pritchett Canyon. It is a popular route for Jeeps and motorcycles, so you shouldn't have trouble finding the trail. In fact, you may have rather noisy company for much of the walk. Pritchett Canyon will open up once you pass Pritchett Natural Bridge. Head southwest toward Hunter Canyon. Look for game trails entering the canyon. Hunter Canyon will dump you back on Kane Creek Road leaving you with about a 4 kilometer walk back to the trailhead.

For planning maps, see the Moab 1:100,000. If you have been mountain biking and have the Latitude 40 Degrees Moab west map, it has the same details. Note: Hunter Canyon is labeled "Hunters Canyon" on some versions of both these maps. The 1:24,000 mapsheets for this hike are Moab and Trough Springs Canyon.
